Discographic Information: Edition Details: On the R1 Extras: The usual special features round out this addition to the "Columbia Classics" line of DVDs. Theatrical trailers, vintage advertising stills, production notes, talent files, and a featurette complement the film. The trailers are for this film, The Loves of Carmen, A Man for All Seasons, and The Last Hurrah. Save for The Loves of Carmen and A Man for All Seasons the trailers are splicy and terribly worn. The vintage artwork gallery consists of eight images, all of poster artwork and lobby cards. The production notes come in the form of a one-page essay printed on an insert inside the DVD case. Though brief, the notes are quite informative, telling of how Rita's musical numbers in the film were added as an afterthought by the studio. The talent files, available for Hayworth, Ford, Macready, and director Vidor, are again the usual brief and cryptic Columbia/Tri-Star affair, just a smattering of biographical information such as birth and death dates along with an abbreviated list of credits. The featurette, "Rita Hayworth: The Columbia Lady," contains information on Rita's career and clips from her films at Columbia Pictures. Running a scant eight minutes, the mini-documentary contains clips from Cover Girl to Only Angels Have Wings in remarkable quality, and covers the usual factoids about Hayworth's career, from the changing of her name from Maria Cansino to undergoing electrolysis to raise her hairline. Unfortunately, the biography ends shortly after Hayworth's return to Columbia Pictures in the early 1950's, failing to mention her later efforts such as Pal Joey and, albeit at another studio, Separate Tables. The featurette has some surprising candor, such as admitting that the plot of Gilda doesn't make much sense. Above taken from Chuck Pennington's DVD review located HERE |

R4 version can be found HERE.

| Comments: | The R1 version is very sharp, and one of the clearest 50 year-old films released on DVD so far. The film was restored by the UCLA Film and Television Archive, obviously using the original negative as the source for the restoration. The image is also very stable, with strong contrast and black levels. The R2 is much hazier and less defined although also taken from the restored version. If you look closely at shots with Hayworth's hair it is most noticeable. The sound and extras are superior on the R1. The only improvement by the R2 is the extensive subtitle selection. Bottom line: Buy the R1. |
